155 North Harbor Drive (Harbor Point) is one of Chicago’s most important, notable and striking buildings. Built in 1972 and standing 54 stories tall on former railroad yards, the black Miesian windows and swirling asymmetrical trilobal shape form the building’s distinctive look. Solomon, Cordwell, Buenz and Associates designed the Mies van der Rohe inspired building. Harbor Point was the last Chicago high-rise built east of Lake Shore Drive. After construction the Drive was rerouted and the building is now west of Lake Shore Drive. 155 Harbor Drive stands as a beacon on the corner of Randolph Street and the lakefront, the area originally known as The Illinois Center. Today the neighborhood is branded as the New East Side.
